Lux intima

Modus Musiikki

Description

The peace that ends “Dolor nascens” seems to prepare the ground for the chamber orchestra piece Lux intima, the most optimistic of all Nevonmaa’s works. Admittedly the listener may again hear echoes of the searing ‘waves of pain’ typical of the previous work. This time, however, they do not completely take over the work, and instead the music seeks to reach beyond those distressing feelings; the pain has become something in the nature of a gentle inner light that casts a conciliatory glow over the work.

Lux intima consists of three movements joined without a break, the last of which is a reworking of the short Tumultuous (1992) for chamber orchestra previously performed independently. The musical focus of Lux intima is on the slow middle movement (bars 70–149) dominated by 6–9-voice, soft and calming string harmonies rich in thirds. The opening section (bars 1–69) is more energetic, in the nature of a broad introduction. The third main section (bars 150–210) culminating in a virtuosic presto brings the work to an end, acting as a symbol of the irrepressible joy of existence to which the pain of living gives profound and harrowing meaning.

Together Dolor nascens et effluens and Lux intima form a pair of works which Nevonmaa tried, in the last years of his life, to expand into a trilogy for orchestra. Unfortunately he was, however, prevented by his illness from completing any more than the first, shortish main section of the third movement, the saxophone concerto Heros serenatus (1995–96). The last work he was ever to complete was thus the beautiful, unaffected Christmas song Hiljene, maa (Be silent, world, 1996).

Very little music has ever been written in Finland on premises similar to those used by Kimmo Nevonmaa. Inhabiting a rich, animated world of fantasy, his works are musical-psychological documents of outstanding interest in Finnish music. Though few in number, they are an important contribution to contemporary Finnish music.

”Dolor nascensin” lopun rauha tuntuu valmistavan maaperää kamariorkesteriteokselle Lux intima, joka on Nevonmaan teoksista kaikkein valoisin. Tosin tässäkin sävellyksessä on kuuluvilla vielä kaikuja edelliselle teokselle tyypillisistä vihlovista ”tuskan aalloista”. Silti nämä eivät enää ala vallita totaalisesti sävellystä, vaan musiikki pyrkii kipeiden tuntojen tuolle puolen, kipu on muuttunut eräänlaiseksi hiljaa hehkuvaksi sisäiseksi valoksi, joka luo teokseen sovittavaa loistettaan.

Lux intima koostuu kolmesta tauotta yhteenliitetystä osasta, joista viimeinen on muokattu aikaisemmin itsenäisenä soitetusta lyhyestä kamariorkesteriteoksesta Tumultuous (1992). Lux intiman ehdoton musiikillinen painopiste on keskimmäisessä hitaassa osassa (t. 70–149), jota vallitsevat 6–9-ääniset terssipitoiset, pehmeät ja rauhoittavasti soivat jousiharmoniat. Avausjakso (t. 1–69) on energisempi, luonteeltaan laajan johdannon kaltainen. Virtuoosiseen prestoon huipentuva kolmas pääjakso (t. 150–210) päättää sävellyksen ikään kuin symbolina olemassaolon lannistamattomalle riemulle, jolle elämän kipeys antaa syvää, riipaisevaa merkitystä.

”Dolor nascens et effluens” sekä Lux intima muodostavat teosparin, jonka Nevonmaa pyrki viimeisenä elinvuotenaan täydentämään trilogiaksi orkesterille. Trilogian kolmannesta osasta, saksofonikonsertosta Heros serenatus (1995–96) ehti valmistua säveltäjän vaikean sairauden vuoksi vain sen ensimmäinen, lyhyehkö pääjakso. Nevonmaan viimeiseksi valmistuneeksi sävellykseksi jäi siten kaunis, koruton joululaulu Hiljene, maa (1996).

Kimmo Nevonmaan teosten kaltaisista lähtökohdista on luotu Suomessa hyvin vähän musiikkia. Hänen rikasta, eloisaa fantasiamaailmaa ilmentävät sävellyksensä kuuluvat poikkeuksellisen mielenkiintoisiin musiikillis-psykologisiin dokumentteihin luovassa säveltaiteessamme. Nevonmaan suppeaksi jäänyt tuotanto tuo siksi tärkeän lisän suomalaisen nykymusiikin kenttään.
