Little wings of gold 2018/2020
Mine, to loose or to hold,
I held it, thus, in my hand.
Mine, to fetter or free –
Which should it be?
Dear little wings of gold […]
Ina Coolbrith: Freedom (Songs from the Golden Gate (1895))
On a windy day as the air blows into the bottles and wind chimes, it creates a sort of split sound that builds into fragile chords – opening and closing, adding more harmonics as the wind gets stronger. I wanted to capture this phenomenon with the subtle overblown flute techniques. The transitions between single pitches with added air and a chord of multiple pitches played simultaneously are the essence of this piece. Almost like breath or a warm breeze that caresses, the piece builds from intimate moments or questions that are left in the air.
Little Wings of Gold for solo flute is re-worked new version of the first movement of Flutterings (2018) for flute and kantele. The flute solo that opens Flutterings has been rearranged and expanded in a new independent miniature for flute solo.
