Leu'dd

Music Finland

Description

Leu'dd was composed 2006 to the K.H. Pentticomposition competition, where it won the first prize in the Wind Orchestra series. The main point of this work was, starting from tradition, to find something new in a familiar, perhaps even a little "stuffy" Wind Orchestra expression.

Leu'dd means a skill to perform a story, or a chronicle of life lived. This skill is passed down in the families of the Eastern Sámi Kolts. Leu’dd is based on one melody motif, which appears once in a modified form in each verse. It is not the same as Yoik.

In this composition, there is no attempt to follow the idea or example of the genuine Leu'dd. The connection is mainly symbolic and spiritual. The composition could also be called symphonic poem. It begins with a chorale theme presented by a saxophone quartet reinforced with bass clarinet and bassoon. This chorale theme is composed, not a genuine Leu’dd - melody. The main thing is on developing and working with the other, different thematic material. At the end the slightly modified chorale theme appears again and is played by the whole orchestra.
