Description

The Prophet was inspired by chapter 3 of the Lamentations in the Bible: “I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. Surely against me he is turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.” The overall mood of The Prophet is, in keeping with that of the text, more austere and desolate than Pingoud’s music in general. As a whole the moods and materials are, however, multidimensional and even slightly kaleidoscopic, and there are also some lyrically impressionistic passages. The Prophet attracted a certain amount of international attention, and Leopold Stokowski conducted it in Philadelphia in 1926.

Le prophète (Profeetta) on saanut lähtökohtansa Raamatun Valitusvirsien 3. luvusta: "Minä olen se mies, joka olen kurjuutta nähnyt hänen vihastuksensa vitsan alla. Minut hän on johdattanut ja kuljettanut pimeyteen, eikä valkeuteen. Juuri minua vastaan hän kääntää kätensä, yhäti, kaiken päivää." Profeetan yleisilme on mottorivien hengessä karumpi ja jylhempi kuin Pingoud'n musiikissa yleensä. Kokonaisuus on kuitenkin tunnelmiltaan ja materiaaliltaan moniulotteinen, jopa hieman kaleidoskooppimainen, ja teoksessa on myös lyyrisen impressionistisia taitteita. Le prophète saavutti myös jonkin verran kansainvälistä huomiota, ja Leopold Stokowski johti sen Philadelphiassa 1926.
