Ten Pieces for Orchestra

Description

The ten pieces for small orchestra are not a logical sequence but a collection of little pieces for different combinations of instruments. Some are for only two or three instruments. The orchestral pieces proper are numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10. The first of the pieces (Largo misterioso) and the last (Vivace giocoso) are also included in the three-movement Partita for orchestra (1927/31). The Largo misterioso is one of the best-known pieces by Aarre Merikanto: a static, mysterious piece uniform in mood. As a whole the collection reflects Merikanto's transition from the modernism of the 1920s to the more traditional expression of the 1930s.

Kymmenen kappaletta pienelle orkesterille ei ole yhtenäinen sarja vaan kokoelma erilaisille kokoonpanoille kirjoitettuja pikkukappaleita. Mukana on kappaleita myös kahden tai kolmen soittajan kamariyhtyeelle; varsinaisia orkesterisävellyksiä ovat nrot 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 ja 10. Kokoelman osista ensimmäinen (Largo misterioso) ja viimeinen (Vivace giocoso) sisältyvät myös kolmiosaiseen Partitaan orkesterille (1927/31). Largo misterioso on yksi Aarre Merikannon tunnetuimmista kappaleista, tunnelmaltaan eheä, pysähtynyt ja salaperäinen miniatyyri. Yleisilmeeltään kokoelma kuvastaa Merikannon siirtymistä 1920-luvun modernismista kohti 1930-luvun perinteisempää ilmaisua.
