Kuusi talven kuvaa (2022) on Joensuun konservatorion tilaama, noin 14 minuutin mittainen sarja kahdelle pianolle, jonka laitoksen piano-oppilaat kantaesittivät konservatorion uudessa salissa Joensuussa 26.4.2022. Osien vaikeusaste vaihtelee noin pt3-tasosta C-tasoon. Vaikka esittäjien taitotaso oli otettava huomioon, halusin kappaleen olevan ilmaisullisesti täysin omaa musiikkiani.
Teoksen negatiivisena inspiraationlähteenä oli Suomen talvi, jota sen kylmyyden ja lumen takia inhoan. En kuitenkaan ruvennut kappaleessa purkamaan vihaani talvea kohtaan, vaan lähestyin aihetta nostalgisten muistojen ja erilaisten impressioiden kautta. Lyhyt hämyisä I osa Sininen hämärä laskeutuu tuo talven. Muita osia ovat valoisa II osa Kaiut lumisessa metsässä, toccatamainen III osa Ratsastus pyryn läpi, kimmeltävän impressionistinen IV osa Luistelu joella, arvoituksellinen V osa Linnut hangella sekä kevään tuova energinen VI osa Heränneen karhun rock. Viimeksi mainitussa osassa astun osittain huonon maun puolelle, mutta niin oli tarkoituskin: sanoihan jo Aarre Merikanto aikanaan, että finaali on aina banaali.
Teos voidaan esittää kerralla kokonaisuudessaan, tai siitä on mahdollista esittää vain yksittäisiä osia. Sama pianoduo voi esittää kerralla koko sarjan, tai esittäjät voivat myös vaihtua osien välillä.

Six Winter Scenes (2022) is a 14 minutes long suite for two pianos. It was commissioned by the Joensuu Conservatory and premiered by its piano students at the new concert hall of the institution in Joensuu on April 26, 2022. The technical level of the movements differs between the pt3 level and the C level of the Finnish music school system classification. While I had to take the technical abilities of the performers into consideration, I wanted the piece to be entirely my own music, when it comes to musical expression.
The negative source of inspiration for the work was the Finnish winter that I hate because of its coldness and snow. However, I did not vent my spleen on the winter in the piece, but I rather approached the topic through nostalgic memories and different impressions. The short, hazy movement I Blue Dusk Descends brings the winter. The other movements include the bright movement II Echoes in a Snowy Forest, the toccata-style movement III Ride through a Blizzard, the glitteringly impressionistic movement IV Ice Skating on the River, the enigmatic movement V Birds on the Snowdrift, and the energetic movement VI Woken Bear Rock, which brings the spring. In the latter movement I partly take a step towards the bad taste, and that was the plan: “finale is always banal”, as Finnish composer Aarre Merikanto (1893–1958) used to say.
My suite can be performed in its entirety at a time, or it is also possible to perform only individual movements of it. The same piano duo may perform the whole work, or the performers may also change between the movements.
