Description

The text is a Finnish traditional broadside ballad. Its story follows a familiar pattern: girl meets boy, boy seduces girl, girl gets pregnant. What is curious (though by no means unusual in the genre) is that the text is very graphic, though without containing any ‘dirty words’. Accordingly, the score contains an indication for performers to produce appropriate sound effects at the relevant point in the story. While these can be omitted, it is not really possible to bowdlerize the text without destroying half of the piece in the process, and for this reason the piece is restricted to women’s choirs — it should not be performed by children’s choirs. It is rated 'R', in other words.

Musically, the piece is very much like a folk-song setting, although the melody here is my own and not traditional.

Teksti on suomalainen balladi. Sen tarina on tuttu: tyttö tapaa pojan, poika viettelee tytön, tyttö tulee raskaaksi. Mielenkiintoista (joskaan ei mitenkään tavatonta tässä tyylilajissa) on, että teksti on hyvin suorasukainen, vaikka siinä ei olekaan yhtään ’rumaa sanaa’. Nuotissa onkin esittäjille kehotus tuottaa asiaankuuluvia ääniefektejä tarinan mukaisesti. Nämä voi toki jättää poiskin, mutta tekstin siistiminen ei oikein onnistu tuhoamatta suurta osaa koko kappaleesta, ja näin ollen teos on rajoitettu naiskuoroille — lapsikuorojen ei tulisi sitä esittää. Teos on siis luokitukseltaan K-16.

Musiikillisesti teos on oleellisesti kansanlaulusovituksen kaltainen, joskin sävelmä on oma tekemä eikä kansanlaulu.
