Konzertstück für Violoncell und Kammerorkester
by Aarre Merikanto
Konserttikappale sellolle ja kamariorkesterille (Concert Piece for Cello and Chamber Orchestra)
für Violoncell und Kammerorchester
Description
The Konzertstück for Cello and Chamber Orchestra was written during Merikanto's modernist period of the 1920s at the suggestion of Lennart von Zweigberg, a Finnish cellist living in Zurich. It was he who premiered it in Zurich in October 1926 and later in the United States. The Konzertstück ties in with the chamber approach favoured by composers such as Hindemith. Instead of exploiting the timbres of the orchestra, the texture is somewhat austere, and the cello clearly dominates. The slow introduction leads to a quick main section that finally dissolves into a solo cadenza for the cello. This is followed by a calm section in which the solo cello has the last word - "The piece just dies away, as it were," the composer said.
