Concerto for Violin, Clarinet, Horn and String Sextet
by Aarre Merikanto
Schott Concerto
Description
The concerto for violin, clarinet, horn and string sextet was to be Merikanto's biggest international success during his lifetime. In 1925 it shared the first prize with four other works in a competition held by Schott the musical publishers, hence the subtitle. It represents the chamber concerto characteristic of the 1920s. The rough texture is at times bitonal, at others more freely atonal. It also displays the dance element typical of Merikanto; this is crystallised in the fast section of the middle movement with its echoes of folk dance. The animated finale contains the first 12-note chord in Finnish music.

Konsertosta viululle, klarinetille, käyrätorvelle ja jousisekstetille tuli Merikannon suurin kansainvälinen menestys hänen eläessään. Teos saavutti vuonna 1925 neljän muun teoksen kanssa jaetun ensipalkinnon B. Schott's Söhne -kustantamon sävellyskilpailussa; tästä myös juontuu usein käytetty lisänimi "Schott-konsertto". Lajiltaan teos edustaa 1920-luvulle ominaista kamarikonserttoa. Teoksen karheasointinen sävelkieli on paikoin bitonaalista, paikoin vapaammin atonaalista.
