Description

The Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra is the second composition I have written inspired by Harri Lidsle’s virtuoso tuba playing. The first was a Sonata for Tuba and Piano, premiered at the Lieksa Brass Week last year.

In the Concerto which has its first performance at today’s concert the tuba remains for a long time in its most singing and technically comfortable register. This is the case as well in the first movement that exposes the most important melodic material of the concerto as in the rapid and sizzling music of the second movement. The third movement is a slow and meditative duet between the oboe and the tuba, and the whole movement is scored only for tuba, oboe, strings and a tubular bell in g1 ringing silently in the horizon of the sound landscape. At the end of this movement the tuba sinks into its deepist register where it remains through the beginning of the fourth movement (here it sais in the score that it is a ‘Russian melody’) till the beginning of the cadenza. The cadenza develops the motivic material of the concerto and ends with one of the central motifs — in the highest register of the tuba. The orchestra joins this motif and the concerto ends with an extended, full-bodied version of the melody that was presented at the beginning of the first movement.

Konsertto tuuballe ja orkesterille on järjestyksessä toinen sävellys, jonka olen kirjoittanut Harri Lidslen tuubataituruuden innoittamana – edellinen oli viime kesänä Lieksan vaskiviikolla kantaesityksensä saanut Sonaatti tuuballe ja pianolle.

Nyt kantaesitettävässä konsertossa tuuba saa pääasiassa viihtyä laulavimmassa ja ketterimmässä rekisterissään. Näin on sekä konserton melodiset pääainekset esittelevässä ensimmäisessä osassa että taiturillisen sähäkässä toisessa osassa. Kolmas osa on oboen ja tuuban mietteliään melodinen vuoropuhelu. Se on orkestroitu vain tuuballe, oboelle, jousille sekä yhdelle putkikellolle, joka soittaa äänimaiseman horisontissa hiljaisen itsepintaisesti yksiviivaista g:tä. Osan lopussa tuuba vajoaa matalimpaan rekisteriinsä, jossa se pysyttelee pitkän tovin: neljännen osan alun läpi (tässä on partituuriin merkitty, että kyseessä on ’venäläinen melodia’) kadenssin alkuun, mistä se kadenssin aikana kohoaa julistaakseen rekisterinsä korkeimmilla sävelillä konserton keskeisintä melodista aihetta, johon orkesteri tarttuu. Konsertto päättyy laajennettuun, pateettiseen versioon melodiasta, joka esiteltiin ensimmaisessä osassa.
