Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 2 in D minor
by Aarre Merikanto
sellolle ja orkesterille in d
Description
Merikanto originally composed his second cello concerto in 1941 but, in his own words, "completely rewrote it" three years later. It is again in the Neoclassical style adopted by him in the 1930s but also incorporates a simplified National-Romantic dimension. The soloist is very much in evidence throughout but does not show off merely for the sake of it. Singing melody occupies the main role in the slow middle movement, which leads without a break to a dancing finale that is lighter than the previous two.
