Kohtalo

by Ilkka Aunu

for male choir and tenor soloist

Description

Uuno Kailas’s poem Kohtalo (“Fate”) was published in his 1928 collection Paljain jaloin (“Barefoot”), published by Otava. The poem is an ode in which the speaker addresses Fate, describing how the struggle with Fate has ultimately transformed his experience of life into one of gratitude and joy.

The setting of Kailas’s poem by Ilkka Aunu takes the form of a set of variations for male choir and tenor soloist. The work is inspired by the powerful sonority of Finnish male choirs and the musical language of early twentieth-century European modernism.
