Kimpale valmistui keväällä 2003 Lahden puhallimusiikkipäiville kapellimestari Petri Junnan pyynnöstä. Lyhyt teos huilulle ja puhallinorkesterille kirjoitettiin erityisesti nuoria soittajia varten. Sen kantaesittivät 29.3.2003 Lahden Konservatoriossa Hanna Tissari, huilu ja nuorisopuhallinorkesteri Junnan johdolla. Heti kantaesityksen jälkeen säveltäjä alkoi pohtia muitakin ”ale”-päätteisiä suomenkielen sanoja. Kimpale saikin muutaman vuoden päästä jatkoa neljän osan verran, kun Sarja huilulle ja jousiorkesterille näki päivänvalon. Kimpaleesta ja koko Sarjasta on olemassa myös sovitus huilulle ja pianolle kustannettuna nuottina.

Nugget (”Kimpale”) was commissioned by conductor Petri Junna and was written for the National Winds Music Days in Lahti in the spring 2003. The short piece for flute and wind band was especially composed for young players. Nugget was first performed on March 29th, 2003 at the Lahti Conservatory by flautist Hanna Tissari and a youth wind band conducted by Petri Junna. Immediately after the premiere other Finnish words ending with “-ale” crossed the composer’s mind. As a result Suite for Flute and String Orchestra, including Nugget as its first movement, saw the daylight after few years. Also a published reduction for flute and piano of Kimpale and the whole Suite exists.
