Le tombeau de Jouni Kaipainen

for theorbo and tape

Description

In the style of the 17th-century French 'Tombeau,' this work uses tone painting techniques, such as ascending and descending scales, traditionally employed to depict the soul's ascent to heaven or descent to the underworld. The repetitions remind us of Death knocking on the door. The descending drone based on the theorbo's open strings serves as a "red thread" for the entire harmonic structure of the work. 'Juoni' is dedicated to my friend Jouni Kaipainen (1956-2015). Life is like waves: sometimes we go uphill, sometimes downhill. Like a roller coaster, life moves quickly at times and then slows down.
