Description

The Juha music is based on the operas of the same name by Leevi Madetoja and Aarre Merikanto. The loans are short and their connection with the plot of the operas and between the events in the drama is very loose. The work is a collage, also in the sense of a melody jigsaw puzzle on a broader scale: the drama of the operas unites with the chamber music idiom, just as the modernism of the first half of the 20th century was reflected off the Finnish national romantic tradition. Everything is drawn with the pen of a contemporary composer - this is my vision of crossover stage music in the year 1998.

Juha-musiikki pohjautuu Leevi Madetojan ja Aarre Merikannon Juha-oopperoihin. Lainaukset oopperoista ovat lyhyitä ja niiden yhteys oopperoiden juonen ja tämän näytelmän tapahtumien kesken on varsin väljä. Teos on kollaasi, minkä käsitän myös melodiapalapeliä laajemmassa mittakaavassa: oopperoiden draamallisuus yhdistyy kamarimusiikilliseen ilmaisuun, samoin taittuvat toisiinsa vuosisatamme alkupuolen modernismin kirjo ja suomalaisen kansallisromantiikan traditio. Kaikki on nykysäveltäjän kynällä piirrettyä - tämä on näkemykseni monityylisestä näyttämömusiikista 1998.
