Joulu joutuen tulevi

by Ilkka Aunu

for male choir

Description

A traditional folk poem from Lavansaari describes the arrival of Christmas.

Joulu joutuen tulevi,

hyvä vieras vieremällä,

tuopi olkia ovista,

permannolla pehkusia,

noilla meijän mellastella,

lasten laulella ilolla.

The poem depicts the old Finnish custom of spreading straw on the floors of homes during the winter months, providing warmth and protection from the cold.

In this Christmas hymn for male choir, Ilkka Aunu sought to create a mystical and archaic atmosphere, transporting the listener into the world of a traditional Karelian Christmas.
