Jouhet
by Ilari Kaila
for string quartet
Description
The piece gets its title from the ancient folk instrument jouhikko, a lyre with strings and bow of horsehairs (“jouhet” in Finnish), and from the dance of the hairs on modern bows as the string quartet charges through passages of rapid, galloping music. Jouhet was commissioned by Finlandia Foundation National, USA, and the Aizuri String Quartet, to mark the 100-year anniversary of Finland.
