Jag vill breda vingar ut

Music Finland

Description

In 1977 I had been working on a utopian super-serial project for a series of vocal pieces based on poems by Gunnar Björling. The method was absurdly complicated and, after several months spent calculating the musical material (!?), only one melody had emerged, Jag vill breda vingar ut", wrote Lindberg, fifteen years after this project. During his first years of composition, Lindberg was barely interested in the sonic aspects of his pieces. Once the serial matrices had been completed, the compositions emerged more or less automatically. Jag vill breda vingar ut (I want to spread my wings), his first attempt at vocal music, is inspired by a poem written in Swedish by the Finnish modernist Gunnar Björling (1887-1860). Lindberg broke the text down into ten different degrees of emotion, which afterwards provided the values for the musical parameters. The mezzo-soprano sings in her own register, while the piano only plays in the low and high registers, thus avoiding the sung notes. The complexity of the piano part certainly explains why the piece has still not been performed, except in an adaptation for Lindeberg's Toimii ensemble that performed the piece arranged for voice (sung by the conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen!), guitar, percussion, clarinet, piano and cello at the Tampere theatre festival in August 1993.
