Description

One of the comments on the premiere of Meriläinen’s Arius at the Finnish National Opera in 1962 was that ‘both the music and the choreography [Elsa Sylvestersson] are perhaps the most modern ever seen on the stage of the National Opera’. In its melodies and harmonies the music comes close to dodecaphony, but it also has the striking rhythms associated with Meriläinen. He then arranged three suites from the ballet for concert use, the Introduction and Variations consisting of the overture to the first act and the machine scene, Suite No. 1 most of the second act and Suite No. 2 almost the whole of the third act.

Kun Meriläisen baletti Arius oli kantaesitetty Suomen Kansallisoopperassa vuonna 1962, siitä todettiin mm., että se on ”sekä musiikiltaan että koreografialtaan [Elsa Sylvestersson] ehkä moderneinta, mitä Kansallisoopperan lavalla on nähty”. Sen musiikki on melodis-harmoniselta ilmeeltään jo lähellä dodekafoniaa, mutta siinä on myös Meriläiselle ominaista iskevää rytmiikkaa. Meriläinen laati teoksesta konserttikäyttöä varten kolme kokonaisuutta, joista Johdanto ja muunnelmia käsittää ensimmäisen näytöksen alkusoiton ja Kone-kohtauksen, Sarja nro 1 suurimman osan toisesta näytöksestä ja Sarja nro 2 lähes koko kolmannen näytöksen.
