Intertetrao

by Otto Nuoranne

for accordion solo

Description

Intertetrao is a 2-minute miniature piece for accordion solo. The piece was written for accordionist and my friend Manca Dornik as a small intermezzo between pieces for my master’s concert “Autofiction”. It was premiered by Manca in the concert on December 12th, 2025.

The title is a wordplay between the musical term intermezzo (‘a short movement separating the major sections of a lengthy composition or work; an independent instrumental composition having the character of such a movement’) and its homophony with the Finnish word metso (name of the bird Western capercaillie, tetrao urogallus). The result is a nonce pseudo-Latin word that in my mind sounded like one of those high-minded concepts that composers love naming their pieces after, but really just means “between capercaillies” at best. It can be performed before other pieces, after them, or independently, in the presence or absence of capercaillies.
