Interludes from the Opera The Last Temptations

Description

The best-known work by Joonas Kokkonen is the highly-popular two-act opera The Last Temptations (1975). The composer later arranged a four-movement orchestral suite of varying moods and striking dramaturgical impact out of the interludes in the first act. The movements follow the events of the opera in chronological order. The powerful first movement ties in with the opening scene of the opera, the dance-like second with the youth of the two main characters, Paavo and Riitta. The third movement culminating in dramatic outbursts depicts the conflicts between Paavo and Riitta and the serene fourth interlude the death of Riitta with which the first act of the opera ends.

Joonas Kokkosen tunnetuin teos on suuren suosion saavuttanut kaksinäytöksinen ooppera Viimeiset kiusaukset (1975). Sen ensimmäisen näytöksen välisoitoista Kokkonen on muokannut neliosaisen, tunnelmiltaan vaihtelevan ja dramaturgisesti tehokkaan orkesterisarjan. Osat seuraavat oopperan tapahtumia aikajärjestyksessä. Väkevä ensiosa liittyy oopperan avauskohtaukseen, tanssillinen toinen osa päähenkilöiden Paavon ja Riitan nuoruuteen. Dramaattisiin purkauksiin kärjistyvässä kolmannessa osassa kuvataan Paavon ja Riitan välisiä ristiriitoja ja seesteinessä neljännessä osassa Riitan kuolemaa, mihin oopperan ensimmäinen näytös päättyy.
