Inauguratio

Description

Inauguratio was composed for the official opening of Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, though the Hall was not ready on time and the work was premiered before the inauguration. It begins symbolically with an oboe A that is part of the opening ritual of any concert, only in this case of a whole concert hall. Towards the beginning it contains colourful timbral webs that call to mind the third symphony, from which the music grows via several episodes with a weighty tread as in a solemn procession towards a magnificent resonant climax.

Inauguratio on sävelletty Helsingin Finlandia-talon avajaisia varten. Tosin talon valmistuminen viivästyi ja teos ehdittiin kantaesittää jo ennen avajaisia. Teos alkaa symbolisesti jokaisen konsertin – ja tässä tapauksessa siis kokonaisen konserttitalon – avajaisrituaaleihin kuuluvalla oboen yksiviivaisella a-sävelellä. Teoksen alkupuolella on kolmannen sinfonian mieleen tuovia värikkäitä sointikenttiä, joista musiikki kasvaa muutaman vakavan juhlakulkueen tavoin askeltavan käänteen kautta uljaasti soivaan loppunousuun.
