Description
“Images d’oiseau pour orgue was written in response to a commission from Espoon Urkuyö ja Aaria Association in 1992.
“Although
the work is written for an organ with four manuals, pedals and to
swell-boxes (SW and BW), it is nevertheless quite possible to play it on
a three-manual instrument. If the organ does not offer many combination
possibilities (or any at all), it is best to make use of two
assistants, one on each side of the organist.
“Detailed
registration have been given in the score for the organ of Helsinki
Cathedral (Marcussen & Son 1966). These may be substituted by
alternatives having a similar tone colour, according to the
possibilities offered by the organ in question, and applying the usual
norms of good taste!
“The bidsongs which appear in the composition
are as follows: nightingale (Luscinia luscinia), pied fly-cathcer
(Ficedula hypoleuca), blackbird (Turdus merula) and great tit (Parus
major). The composer recorded the songs of these birds mainly in the
area around Järvenpää in Southern Finland, near his home. The songs were
analysed and used as an important element in the composition.”

*The
stones should be approx. 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter. They should be
placed on a piece of foam rubber or sponge, into which two holes have
been carved to make sure that the stones do not roll out. The sponge
should be light in density, to avoid dampening the resonance stone. When
playing the stones, remove only one from its hole and strike against
the other.

”Vaikka
sävellys on kirjoitettu uruille, joissa on neljä sormiota, jalkio ja
kaksi paisutuskaappia (SW ja BW), voidaan Lintukuvia toteuttaa hyvin
myös kolmisormioisella soitimella. Jos kombinaatioita ei ole runsaasti
tai ei ollenkaan, on joustavinta käyttää kahta rekisteröintiavustajaa.
”Äänikerrat
(Marcussen & Son 1966, Helsingin Tuomiokirkko) ovat tarkasti
annetut, mutta ne voidaan korvata vastaavilla sointiväreillä
suhteuttamalla annetut ohjeet urkujen mahdollisuuksiin. Tämä kaikki
tehtäköön ’hyvällä maulla’.
”Sävellyksessä esiintyvät linnut ovat
satakieli (Luscinia luscinia), kirjosieppo (Ficedula hypoleuca),
mustarastas (Turdus merula) ja talitiainen (Patrus major). Säveltäjä on
nauhoittanut mainittujen lintujen laulua pääasiassa Järvenpään seudulla.
Ääninauhoille tallennettu ja myöhemmin analysoitu linnunlaulu oli
tärkeä musiikillinen lähtökohta varsinaiselle sävellystyölle.”

*Kivien on oltava halkaisijaltaan noin 5 cm. Ne on
asetettava pesusienen päälle, johon on kaiverrettu kaksi koloa
vierimisen estämiseksi. Vaahtomuovin on oltava kevyttä, jottei se
vaimentaisi kivien sointia. Kun soitat kivillä, ota käteesi ainoastaan
yksi kivi ja lyö sillä toista.
