Illanvälke
by Lauri Toivio
Huiluyhtyeelle
Evening Gleam
for flute ensemble
Description
Vaikka huiluyhtyeteos Illanvälke sisältää uusia tekniikoita kuten kielipizzicato, tongue ram, jet whistle tai flageoletit, se ei ole improvisatorinen – tunnelmaltaan pikemminkin pastoraalinen verrattuna Toivion toiseen huiluyhtyeelle kirjoittamaan teokseen ”Uudemmasta maailmasta”. Jos nämä kontrastoivat teokset sijoitetaan ohjelmaan rinnakkain, soittajat huomaavat kuinka samoja tekniikoita voidaan käyttää erilaisten tunnelmien luomiseen. Siksi on tärkeää etteivät eri efektit luo teoksen otsikon vastaista vaikutelmaa.
Teoksessa on kahdeksan stemmaa, joista jokaista voi soittaa haluttu määrä huilisteja, stemmojen välistä balanssia kuitenkaan unohtamatta. Balanssi toteutuu parhaiten lisäämällä soittajien määrää per stemma ensimmäisestä kahdeksanteen: on suositeltavaa että stemmoissa 5–8 on enemmän soittajia kuin neljässä ensimmäisessä. 1. ja 2. stemmaan riittää hyvin yksikin soittaja kumpaankin.
Avainsanat: jet whistle, kielipizzicato, tongue ram, flageoletit
Taitotaso: Vasta-alkajat – Hieman edistyneemmät – Syventyneet (stemmasta riippuen)

Even if the flute ensemble piece Evening Gleam includes techniques such as tongue pizzicato and rams, jet whistles and harmonics, it is not improvisatory and more pastoral in feeling compared to Toivio’s ”From the Newer World”, a contrasting piece for flute ensemble. Programming both pieces by Toivio can help players understand how the same techniques can be used in different ways to produce different feelings. Thus it is important to avoid the different effects creating an atmosphere not related to the title.
The piece has eight flute parts, of which each one can be played by any number of flautists, without loosing the balance between the parts however. A good balance is easily reached by increasing the number of parts’ players gradually from the first to the eighth: it is recommended that parts 5–8 have more players than the first four. It is enough to have only one player in the 1st and 2nd part.
