Hymnen an die Nacht
by Ernest Pingoud
Hymnejä yölle
nach Novalis für grosses Orchester
Description
A true cosmopolitan, Pingoud drew inspiration from many quarters: Russian modernism, French symbolism, and German culture in general. Hymnen an die Nacht was inspired by the German poet Novalis. Associated with each of the movements is a fragment from the collection by Novalis of the same name. The first paints a static and at times impressionistic nocturnal mood, the second is an airy scherzo, and the closing movement swells to a great crescendo tinged with Wagnerian chromaticism and sentimentality inherited from Tchaikovsky.

Pingoud sai aitona kosmopoliittina virikkeitä monilta tahoilta, venäläisestä modernismista, ranskalaisesta symbolismista ja yleisemmin saksalaisesta kulttuurista. Hymnen an die Nacht -teoksen innoittajana on ollut saksalainen runoilija Novalis. Jokaiseen osaan liittyy katkelma Novalisin samannimisestä runokokoelmasta. Ensiosa maalaa pysähtyneen, paikoin impressionistisesti sävyttyneen yötunnelman, toinen osa on ilmava scherzo ja päätösosa kasvaa kiihkeään nousuun, jossa on sekä wagneriaanista kromatiikkaa että Tshaikovskilta periytyvää pateettisuutta.
