hehku

glow, glow
Viimeinen tango Tampereella
Description
hehku is music for a tango ensemble, but I do not know whether it is a tango. As food for thought in carrying out the commission from the InTime Quintet I took the Quintet’s CD and Astor Piazzolla’s claim that "The tango is a state of mind". Both the Argentine tango and the evergreen mood of the Finnish Saturday night dance floor seemed very alien to me as a basis for composition, and the danger of clichés would have been great. Instead of producing a stylised tango I decided to follow another path: to compose a work with the ensemble’s audio-world, the sound itself at the core. As my building materials I chose means characteristic of dance music yet not so widely cultivated in the modernist tradition, such as rhythms based on a steady beat, and melody.
I leave it to the listener to decide whether the glow (hehku) of the piece is the impassioned light of a summer’s night or the cool, distant shimmer of the morning star.
