The Swedish-speaking Finnish writer Jarl Hemmer (1893-1944) is best known for his idyllic poems
about love and nature. But he was in reality a deeply troubled man who also wrote about fear,
anxiety and sorrow.
This work, Fem dikter av Jarl Hemmer (Five Poems by Jarl Hemmer) is a vocal cycle in disguise, as
there is a sense of direction in the narrative: the goal is to wander away from the dark and troubled
mood of the first song. This happens by being open to experiences of happiness and love, to have
the courage to live in the moment and not fear depression or death.
