Fantasia
by Aarre Merikanto
Fantasy for Orchestra
orkesterille
Description
The first orchestral work of Aarre Merikanto's modernist period of the 1920s is the Fantasia, initially intended as his third symphony. Scored for a larger orchestra than usual, it is in one movement that nevertheless falls into slower and faster sections. Expressionistic in tone, the music exudes a volcanic primitive strength that gathers force in violent eruptions. The melodies are for the most part made up of short motifs arising out of the dissonant harmonies and gritty, often rugged web-like orchestration.

Aarre Merikannon 1920-luvun modernistisen kauden ensimmäinen orkesteriteos on Fantasia orkesterille, josta säveltäjä kaavaili aluksi kolmatta sinfoniaansa.
