Description

My violin concerto Enchanted Garden is composed for large orchestra and solo violin. The subtitle of the work is 'a musical tale in eight chapters'. The movements, or chapters, of the work are: Sunset - Awakening - Enchantment - Secret - Gathering - Dance - Feast - Sunrise.

The concerto is a drama composed so that the main character is the soloist and the orchestra instruments take role of a commentator. In the beginning and the end the bells characterize sunset and sunrise. The chapter Awakening is a symmetrical pair to the Gathering. These two chapters are transitions which lead the listener to a new focus. In the chapter Enchantment one hears strange sounds from the orchestra. The Secret is a scherzo, a humorous and playful chapter to lighten up the mood in the middle which contains also theatrical elements. The Dance is a cadenza for the soloist which surprisingly doesn't end when orchestra starts to play but in the end of the cadenza leads all the instruments. The Feast is a glance of a released playing, guiding the music towards the eighth chapter. This all happens in 20 minutes of charmed music. This work should not be listened with closed eyes.

UNM; programme note for the premiere of the work

Viulukonserttoni Enchanted Garden (Lumottu puutarha) on sävelletty suurelle orkesterille ja sooloviulistille. Teoksen alaotsikkona on 'Musiikillinen satu kahdeksassa luvussa'. Konserton osat eli luvut ovat: Auringonlasku - Herääminen - Lumous - Salaisuus - Kokoontuminen - Tanssi - Juhla - Auringonnousu.

Teos on draamaa sävellettynä niin, että päähenkilönä on solisti ja tarinaa kommentoivat orkesterisoittimet. Auringonnoususta ja -laskusta kertovat kellot, joiden ääntä on venytetty orkestereisoittimiin. Herääminen on symmetrinen pari Kokoontumiselle. Nämä kaksi lukua ovat välikkeitä, jotka johdattelevat kuulijan uuteen asiaan. Lumous-luvussa kuullaan outoja ääniä. Salaisuus on scherzo, leikkisä ja humoristinen välikevennys, jossa on myös teatterillisia elementtejä. Tanssi on solistin kadenssi, joka poikkeuksellisesti ei lopu orkesterin tullessa mukaan, vaan solisti tanssittaa kadenssinsa lopuilla koko orkesteria. Juhla on välähdys vapautunutta musisointia johdattaen samalla musiikin kohti kahdeksatta lukua. Tämä kaikki tapahtuu 20 minuutissa sadunomaista musiikkia. Tätä teosta ei kannata kuunnella silmät ummessa.
