Element
by Sebastian Fagerlund
Description
The sound material of the piece is created from a short violin harmonic which functions throughout the piece as a basic impulse or 'element'. The original violin tone has been processed with different computer programmes resulting in a rich variety of sound fields and spectrums.
During the piece the violin tone undergoes a constant change and metamorphose. In the beginning the 'element' possesses qualities typical of a violin tone but in the end there is only a vague impulse of the original tone left.
The piece was premiered in helsinki May 15, 1998 and has since been performed several times in Finland. In 1999 the composition was selected for the final of the International Gaudeamus Composers' Competition and was performed in Amsterdam (Gaudeamus Music Week, September 6 - 16, 1999). The compositions was realized at the SACMUS studio at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki.

Teokseni Element äänimateriaali on peräisin lyhyestä viulun flageoletti-äänestä.
Vuonna 1999 teos valittiin 20 parhaan joukkossa finaaliin Gaudeamus-sävellyskilpailuun. Se esitettiin Amsterdamissa Gaudeamus-viikon yhteydessä 6.-16.9.1999. Teos on toteutettu Sibelius-Akatemian SACMUS-studiossa.
