Elegia No. 5
by Erkki Salmenhaara
pour cordes et cloche
Description
After an interval of several decades, Elegia no. 5 for string orchestra and campana continues my 1960's series of elegias (for wind orchestra, double string quartet, solo viola, solo cello). The work was commissioned by Henri-Claude Fantapié, leader of the French group Dionysos. Elegia was premiered by Dionysos at a Nordic music concert held on December 13, 1995 at the Finnish Institute in France. The group has also recorded the composition.
“This brief composition is based on harmony and rhythm. The syncopated upbeat leads to the 3/4 rhythm, which might be a bit difficult to grasp without knowledge of the whole structure. In the beginning, the chords seem to ‘ramble’ but finally they achieve their tonal goal.

Elegia n:o 5 jousiorkesterille ja yhdelle kellolle (campana) jatkaa pitkän tauon jälkeen 1960-luvulla sävellettyjen elegioiden sarjaa (puhallinyhtyeelle, kaksoisjousikvartetille, sooloalttoviululle, soolosellolle). Konkreettisena virikkeenä teoksen synnylle oli ranskalaisen Dionysos-yhtyeen johtajan Henri-Claude Fantapién tilaus Suomen Ranskan-instituutin pohjoismaista konserttia varten Pariisissa 13.12.1995. Yhtye on myös levyttänyt sävellyksen.
Tämän lyhyen kappaleen pääidea on harmonis-rytminen. Nuottikuvaa tuntematta kuulijan on luultavasti vaikea hahmottaa synkopoidulla kohotahdilla alkavaa 3/4-rytmiä, jossa eräänlainen ’harhaileva’ sointusarja etenee löytääkseen kappaleen lopussa tonaalisen päämääränsä.
