Ekho
by Aarre Merikanto
Description
The Autumn Sonnet and Ekho were written soon after the opera Juha and rank among the most homogeneous works of Merikanto's 1920s modernist period. The idiom in both is freely atonal and the orchestral timbres are rich in shade and nuance. The Autumn Sonnet and Ekho may be regarded as sister works in that they perfectly complement each other. Merikanto described the differences between them as follows: "The Autumn Sonnet should be performed more on the slow side, elegiacally. Bring out the grey, mist-grey melancholy. Ekho is in a way the opposite, though not without elegiac features. Lively, story-like, a woman in love full of unrequited longing. Ekho more picturesque - Autumn Sonnet more personal."

Saatava esiin harmaata, usvan harmaata alakuloisuutta. Ekho taas tavallaan vastakohta, joskin siinäkin on elegistä sävyä mukana. Vilkkaasti, kertovasti, rakastavan naisen kaipuuta täyttymätöntä. Ekho enemmän maalauksellinen - Syyssonetti enemmän persoonallinen."
