the birds of yesterday, the birds of yesterday
Description
The basic idea is simple. The piece begins with two worlds totally alien to each other: cool, brittle pillars of sound and warm-timbred heterophonic arches of melody. The worlds draw closer together, get larger, and begin to react to each other: overlapping, shifting. Having reached a climax - an encounter - in the nature of a synthesis, they once again part company and draw away, but this does not signify a return to the beginning. Even after they have drawn apart, the pillars of sound and the threads of melody bear features one of the other: the coldness of pure sound and fourths, or the warmth of vibrato and thirds. Time is memory.
I composed most of the work in Berlin in late autumn 1993. eilisen linnut looks backwards and forwards, far away...

Kappaleen perusidea on yksinkertainen. Alussa kuullaan kaksi erillistä, toisilleen vierasta maailmaa: viileät, hauraat sointupilarit ja lämminsointiset heterofoniset melodiakaarrokset. Maailmat lähenevät toisiaan, suurenevat ja alkavat reagoida toisiinsa: päällekkäisyyttä, siirtymiä. Synteesinomaisen huipennuksen – kohtaamisen – jälkeen seuraa erkaneminen ja etääntyminen, mutta se on muutakin kuin paluu alkuun. Erilleen vetäydyttyäänkin sointupylväät ja melodialangat sisältävät piirteitä toisistaan: suoran äänen ja kvarttien viileyttä tai vibraton ja terssien lämpöä. Aika on muisti.
