Eclipse
by Jukka Koskinen
Description
The cello-piano duo Eclipse commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company was completed in summer 1999. I tried to force myself to do something else than I have done in many other recent work, which could be described as howling. In Eclipse, instead of constant crescendo and diminuendo, the dynamics changes less often (or more abruptly) and so does the rhythm: instead of the earlier typical processes of coalescing determined by exponential mathematics, this work uses a clearly audible nearly unchanging isorhythmic structure.

Radion tilaama sello-pianoduo Eclipse valmistui kesällä 1999. Koetin siinä pakottaa itseni tekemään jotakin muuta kuin muissa viime aikoina säveltämissäni teoksissa, joista monia voitaisiin luonnehtia ulinaksi. Eclipsessä crescendojen ja diminuendojen jatkuvan vuorottelun sijasta dynamiikka on harvemmin (tai porrasmaisesti) muuttuvaa samoin kuin rytmi: aikaisemmin tyypillisten eksponentiaalimatematiikan määräämien pitkien tihenemisprosessien sijasta käytetään selvästi kuultavaa lähes muuttumatonta isorytmiikkaa. Musiikki on pääasiassa tasavireistä, koska aikaisemmin jatkuvasti läsnäolleita mikrointervalleja ja pienenpieniä glissandoja käytetään vain mausteena.
