Ecce magnus presbiter
by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi
Description
Ecce magnus presbiter is a setting of a sequence from the Medieval Liturgy of St Henry, the patron saint of Finland, whose relics were translated to Turku Cathedral in connection with its consecration in 1300. The Liturgy is the earliest work of music known to have been created in Finland. The text of the sequence first recalls the martyrdom of Bishop Henry — set here in an austere and Medieval-ish style interspersed with alleluia sections — and then exhorts the people of Finland to rejoice in the salvation brought to them by this holy man. This livelier and harmonically richer verse leads into a concluding alleluia.

Ecce magnus presbiter on sovitus Pyhän Henrikin liturgiaan kuuluvasta sekvenssistä. Suomen suojeluspyhimyksen jäännökset siirrettiin Turun tuomiokirkkoon sen vihkimisen yhteydessä vuonna 1300. Liturgia on varhaisin tunnettu Suomessa luotu sävelteos.
