Circulating Concerto Grosso

for an ensemble of 10 players

Description

In my childhood, I owned a bicycle with a dynamo attached to its front wheel. This spinning device produces a small electric current that powers the bicycle lamp. The faster you pedal, the brighter the light shines, and vice versa.

In Dynamo, the music continuously "spins," creating a steady stream of notes and modulations that resemble a perpetual motion machine, resulting in a mechanical, even manic, musical texture. This piece resembles a bicycle ride: there are various terrains, including uphills and downhills, and the bicycle lamp shines brightly at times while dimming at others. The scenery and moods shift rapidly, ranging from celestial and pastoral themes to bacchanalian festivities and the intensity of a heavy metal concert.

Dynamo is subtitled Circulating Concerto Grosso. The work is composed for ten musicians, whose roles are constantly circulating. At different moments, an instrument may play a solo, then transition into a duo or trio, and at times, all the performers come together to create a full tutti texture. TR, 2025
