"...durch einen Spiegel..."
by Joonas Kokkonen
Metamorphosen für 12 Streicher und Cembalo, Metamorphosis for 12 strings
Description
One of Kokkonen’s finest works, ”...durch einen Spiegel…” was inspired by a spiritual revelation that reminded him of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians in the Bible. It is a synthesis of the firm motivic structure and mystical world of timbre characteristic of the composer. The colour dimension is created both by his use of a harpsichord and by the flageolet sounds, tremolo carpets and sul ponticello and sul tasto playing on the strings. Although performed without a break, it clearly falls into four movements: two slow framing two quick. The expression ranges from the dance-like swing of the third movement to the slow, introvert and at times visionary meditation of the closing one.
