This work was for quite some time a ‘mood in search of a text’. I had conceived a certain sort of mood and texture to which I needed to find a suitable text. Essentially, it is a siciliano/lullaby in a D flat tonality, tailored to the rather exceptional vocal range of the Talla ensemble. I also felt that the end result somehow had to dovetail with the theme of the recording for which this piece was commissioned - the disc is entitled A Day in Paradise.

The musical material for this work largely existed already when I finally came across this text by Nikolaus Lenau in a choral work by Hugo Wolf; Wolf has nothing to do with the musical material of my setting, though. Lenau’s poem is a highly typical Romantic image: the poet contemplates a sleeping child and laments the lost innocence he perceives. The text may seem intolerably naïve from today’s viewpoint, and thus the text acquires a further metaphysical level: the modern reader contemplates the poem and laments the lost Romantic emotional experience he perceives. Or whatever.

In any case, I find it suggestive that I felt compelled to mention in the printed score that this work is in no way meant as a parody.

Tämä teos oli melko pitkän aikaa ‘tunnelma vailla tekstiä’. Minulla oli mielessäni tietty tunnelma ja tekstuurityyppi, johon yritin sitten löytää sopivaa tekstiä. Oleellisesti musiikillinen materiaali on Des-tonaliteetissa liikkuva siciliano/kehtolaulu, joka on räätälöity teoksen tilanneen Talla-lauluyhtyeen melko poikkeukselliselle äänialalle. Lisäksi minusta tuntui, että lopputuloksen tulisi jotenkin niveltyä sen levytyksen teemaan, jota varten tämä teos tilattiin - levyn nimi on A Day in Paradise (Päivä paratiisissa).

Teoksen musiikillinen materiaali oli suureksi osaksi jo olemassa kun lopulta löysin onnekseni tämän Nikolaus Lenaun tekstin eräästä Hugo Wolfin kuoroteoksesta; musiikillisesti Wolfilla ei kuitenkaan ole mitään tekemistä tämän teoksen kanssa. Lenaun runo on mitä tyypillisin romanttinen kuva: runoilija katselee nukkuvaa lasta ja suree lapsessa näkemäänsä kadotettua viattomuutta. Teksti voi tämän päivän näkökulmasta tuntua sietämättömän naiivilta, ja niinpä se saakin uuden metafyysisen tason: tekstin nykyaikainen lukija suree runossa näkemäänsä kadotettua romanttista tunne-elämystä tms.

Mielestäni on jotenkin oireellista joutua laittamaan painettuun nuottiin maininta siitä, että teosta ei ole tarkoitettu parodiaksi.
