Cornucopia

by Tomi Räisänen

for Recorder, Viol/Cello, Harpsichord & Tape

Description

The cornucopia, or the horn of plenty, was a symbol of abundance and prosperity in classical antiquity. The cornucopia has often been described as a spiral horn overflowing with fruits. Accordingly, this work is based on continuous symmetrical sequences, which endlessly generate more and more musical material. Besides playing their own instruments, each member of the trio also operates an individual electronic system, which works as an extension of the instrument. It seems like the instruments exuberantly burst out sound even when they are not being played. At the end of the work the cornucopia keeps bursting out its delicacies as the sequence gets stuck and repeats itself again and again.
