Concertino

Concertino
Description
Concertino is based on the music of the first movement of my Clarinet Concerto (1998). The orchestra has here been replaced by an electronic soundtrack. The opening movement of the concerto was inspired by precisely the kind of dance music whose sound world is evoked by the electronic soundtrack of Concertino. In a way, this makes the original orchestral work an arrangement of the later electronic version! The soundtrack was made in a private studio using mainly analogue and digital synhesizers, with rock musician John Vihervä as studio assistant.
Originally the soloist's part of Concertino was written for the rare basset clarinet (2001). In the spirit of the Remix, I have also written a version for trumpet (2004), and the piece has even been performed on the accordion. The bass clarinet version was written in 2009 for the Finnish bass clarinet virtuoso Heikki Nikula, who premiered it in Helsinki in a club night organized by the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra.

Concertino perustuu klarinettikonserttoni ensimmäiseen osaan. Orkesterin osuus on korvattu elektronisilla äänillä, jotka kuullaan nauhalta (ääniraidalta, kuten nykyään sanotaan). Klarinettikonserton avausosa oli juuri sellaisen tanssimusiikin innoittama, jonka sointimaailmaan nämä soundit kuuluvat, joten tavallaan se olikin oman koneversionsa etukäteen syntynyt sovitus. Concertinon soolosoitin on basettiklarinetti. Kappaleesta on myös versio trumpetille, bassoklarinetille ja onpa se soitettu haitarillakin. Remix on aikamme laji.
