Comme une graine...

by Paola Livorsi

for soprano and bandoneon

Description

Comme une graine... (2025) is part of the song cycle Songs of winter and war (written for Pia Freund and Dialogia! festival 2025). The title refers to a poem by Giuseppe Ungaretti (originally in French), which could be translated as: “Like a seed, my soul also needs the secret labour of this season.”

As Mikhail Durnenkov writes in his aptly titled drama The War Has Not Yet Started (2014), war is unfortunately part of our present – it can be felt everywhere, even if it is not here yet.

The cycle is based on texts by Ukrainian poet Oksana Zabuzhko, translated into English. It includes some terms in Russian and Ukrainian, among some of the languages used in the ongoing conflicts.

How do the echoes of different languages separate or unite us? Is translation even possible?
