Colori ed improvvisazioni
by Erik Bergman
Description
Colori ed improvvisazioni marks the beginning of Bergman’s best-known stylistic period — that of rich colours (as the very name of the work suggests) and improvisation in the form of guided aleatory. In practice this means that he has abandoned bar lines in the first of the three movements. Towards the end of the first movement and in the second and third he introduces time—space notation, stating the exact time (in seconds) needed to play a given section. The music is characterised by short, often chant-like motifs, rising crescendo lines, evocative rhythms and various trill and tremolo webs.
