Description

Circulus coincides with a change of style in Bergman’s output. While he is moving on from his dodecaphonic-serialist period and thus from row technique, he has not yet reached the timbre stage drawing on improvisation and aleatory characteristic of his later works. Dominant features of the work are the complex rhythms and rich timbres, both enhanced by the extensive use of percussion instruments. Melody, by contrast, is assigned very much a secondary role.

Circulus sijoittuu tyylilliseen murrosvaiheeseen Bergmanin uralla. Yhtäältä hän on luopunut dodekafonis-sarjallisesta vaiheestaan ja siten riviteknisestä lähtökohdasta. Toisaalta hän ei ole vielä siirtynyt siihen improvisaatiota ja aleatorisuutta hyödyntävään väri-ilmaisuun, joka on ominaista hänen myöhemmälle tuotannolleen. Teoksessa keskeisellä sijalla ovat kompleksinen rytmiikka ja rikkaat sointivärit, joita kumpaakin elävöittää runsas lyömäsoittimisto. Sen sijaan melodinen elementti jää täysin sivurooliin.
