Chorale Prelude "Ave Maris Stella"

by Terhi Dostal

for solo harp (or piano)

Description

The chorale prelude Ave Maris Stella is based on the medieval hymn from the Finnish Piae Cantiones collection, published by Heikki Klemetti as his own arrangement in 1911. Klemetti’s Romantic-era version adapts the original melody, which is widely recognized in Finland as a Latin Christmas carol. In this composition, the chorale melody unfolds in the middle voice using augmented, slow note values, enveloped by a newly composed, independent texture. Although originally scored for solo harp, the piece is equally suitable for performance on the piano.
