Description

Chantecler is a fairly small, concise work refreshingly asymmetrical in form and lies somewhere between Impressionism and late Romanticism. The first half is dominated by a lively, colourful scherzo mood. This is later contrasted by the melodic romanticism bearing echoes of the Russian Romantics. The scherzo section does not, contrary to expectation, reappear in its entirety, being reduced to no more than a few fragmentary gestures.

Chantecler on suppeahko mutta muodoltaan raikkaasti epäsymmetrinen kokonaisuus, jonka musiikki sijoittuu impressionismin ja myöhäisromantiikan välimaastoon. Teoksen alkupuolta hallitsee ilmavan värikäs ja eloisa scherzo-sävy. Vastakkaista ulottuvuutta edustaa laulava romanttisuus, jossa kuuluu venäläisten romantikkojen vaikutusta. Scherzo-jakso ei odotuksista poiketen kuitenkaan palaa täydessä mitassaan vaan jää muutamien katkelmallisten eleiden varaan.
