Description

Celestial Bodies continues Virtaperko’s long-term collaboration with accordionist Veli Kujala, which by 2014 has resulted four solo works and one double concerto – all commissioned & premiered by Kujala.

The composer writes about the new piece: ”Celestial Bodies” combines conventional notation with the proportional and rhythmically relative notational practices of French Baroque Prélude non mesuré. The tension between strictly notated material and freely floating, fantasy-like texture provide the piece with its charasteristic identity. The title of the work refers to the Antique-originated Keplerian idea of planets and stars – celestial bodies – creating divine music, ”harmony of spheres”, while moving in their orbits. This impression is converted to musical fantasy, where the frequent bursts of unmeasure prelude texture try to distract the noble celestial bodies from their orbits.”
