But what are musical notes but water in a lake

by Timo Tuhkanen

for any voice and any instruments

Description

Using a graphic score for any voice and instruments the piece looks at the idea of recitative with ensemble with the freest possible notation system. Whereas in my other graphic pieces there is a clear mapping of material within a temporal pitch space, this piece explores the the poetic possibilities of words and shapes within a spatial dimensionality that isn't tied to direction. A vectorial space where all directions are tied to the relations they have with each other. How do musicians navigate these drawings that can be read from any direction and in any direction? How can a singer sing words that are written sideways or upside down in the wrong direction? In this way the piece asks the musicians to look at the score in a new way and explore their thinking in relation to the possible ways to move in musical space with their instruments.
