Aikaviiva

Timeline - Concerto No. 2 for Orchestra, Timeline
Konsertto No.2 orkesterille, Concerto No. 2 for Orchestra
Description
Meriläinen gave Aikaviiva (Timeline) the subtitle Concerto no. 2 for Orchestra. The concerto aspect is most apparent in the fast-movement sections for the wind instruments against a backdrop painted by the strings. The music consists of shimmering webs, glittering colours and fleeting fragments of melody. Yet beneath the surface is an ominous threat that finally erupts in violence. Towards the end there are two climaxes separated by a beautiful string texture woven from long notes. The long brass pedal point on F sharp may be regarded as one manifestation of the timeline motif expressed in the title.

Meriläinen on antanut teokselleen Aikaviiva alaotsikon ”konsertto nro 2 orkesterille”. Konsertoivat ulottuvuudet värittävät ennen muuta puhaltimien nopealiikkeisiä osuuksia, joille jousisto maalaa taustaa. Teoksen musiikki koostuu väreilevistä sointikentistä, kimmeltävistä väreistä ja ohivilahtavista melodiafragmenteista. Pinnan alla on kuitenkin kytevää uhkaa, joka purkautuu väkivaltaisesti. Loppupuolella on kaksi huipennusta, joiden välissä soi hivelevän kaunis, pitkistä äänistä rakentuva jousikudos. Pitkää käyrätorvien fis-urkupistettä voi pitää yhtenä otsikon aikaviiva-aiheen ilmentymänä.
