A Short Lament for Trees

by Pietari Kaasinen

for solo cello

Description

The central idea behind the form of this solo cello miniature is a gradual erosion of the melodic material at the beginning into the noisier (but quiet), fragmented sound world at the end. The melodic material subtly borrows some contours from Sibelius' tone poem Tapiola, the title of which is a reference to the mythological Finnish forest god. In the miniature, the cello sounds lonely and fragile, and the performer has plenty of freedom to control the tempo and to pause to listen to the sounds.
