... de Tartuffe, je crois is an early proof of Lindberg’s originality. It is not a very typical example of his work, for it contains a number of quotations — even though the majority of them are from his own music. Tartuffe grew out of the incidental music composed in 1980 for a performance of Mikhail Bulgakov’s play Molière, or the Conspiracy of Pietists. This explains the title of the work and the couple of lines spoken by the players, and of course some of the music itself. Both the non-Lindbergian quotations are from Molière’s time: the harmonic progression of the march-like episode that culminates the work was borrowed from Rameau and the piano’s serene mourning music on Molière’s death is from Lully. Lindberg also makes numerous borrowings from the choral work Untitled he composed in 1978 but which has still [ca. 1990] not been performed.The diversity of the material is also typical of other music by Lindberg. He creates cohesion not by motif work but by drama. The contrasting of different musical characters sets up tensions that give the music motive energy. The rapid silhouetting of one scene against another is true Lindberg — and Bulgakov. The piece has been presented on several occasions since then, both in concert and on radio, and is among Lindberg’s most popular compositions to date.The title of the work directs us towards a little-known play, Molière, or the Conspiracy of Pietists by the Russian formalist Mikhail Bulgakov. The title is taken from a line delivered in the play. Magnus Lindberg wrote the incidental music for a performance of the play in Helsinki in 1980, and the basic material for the quintet which followed a year later is in some measure derived from the score written for the play. Bulgakov’s work deals with Molière’s personal problems — the man behind the stagelights — for example, the fact that he was said to have married his own daughter, and with the playwright’s external relationships, for example that with the French State and establishment.The composer tells us that he tried to describe this conflicting dual structure in his music. The work proceeds on two levels, one of which is linked with Moliere’s everyday life, and the other with his subconscious, his dreams, his imagination, etc. The dream-level is realized here using quotations from Magnus Lindberg’s own music. The quintet includes the whole of a work composed in 1978 for 20 solo voices, Untitled, a piece so complex that it has remained unperformed in its original form. The snatches of dialogue to be heard in the course of the quintet are taken from Bulgakov’s play.X, ca. 1990Le quintette de Magnus Lindberg pour quartette à corde et piano intitule ...de Tartuffe, je crois vit le jour en 1981, pour les besoins des festivités de musique de chambre de Kuhmo. Représenté à maintes reprises après la première, a l’occasion de concerts publics comme de diffusions radiophoniques, cette oeuvre reste jusqu'à ce jour l’une des plus appréciées de Magnus Lindberg.Le titre de l’oeuvre évoque la pièce peu connue de l’écrivain formaliste russe Mihaïl Boulgakov — Molière dont il est l’extrait d’une réplique. Magnus Lindberg écrivit la musique de la pièce pour sa représentation à Helsinki en 1980, travail a l’origine des éléments fondamentaux du quintette ne par la suite et qui, dans certaines limites, s’en inspire. Boulgakov dans sonoeuvre traite des problèmes personnels de Molière, l’homme derrière le rideau de la scène, — à titre d’exemple son soi-disant mariage avec sa fille — et d’autre part les rapports de l’écrivain vers l’extérieur, par exemple à l’égard de l’Etat français.Le compositeur s’explique; dans sa musique, dit-il, il s’est efforcé de décrire ces états de confrontation. La composition progresse sur deux niveaux; l’un a trait à la vie quotidienne de Molière, l’autre au subconscient aux rêves, a l’imagination etc. de celui-ci. Le niveau du rêve de cette oeuvre s’affirme ici par des citations que Magnus Lindberg emprunte à sa propre musique.Le quintette inclut en particulier intégralement Untitled composée en 1978, pour 20 chanteurs solistes, non représenté dans sa forme originale en raison de la complexité qui la caractérise. Les extraits parlés du quintette proviennent de la pièce de Boulgakov.X, ca. 1990... de Tartuffe, je crois est une oeuvre particulière, car elle se compose pour une grande partie de citations, essentiellement d'autocitations. La pièce tire son titre d'une réplique de la pièce de théâtre sur Molière, pour laquelle Lindberg avait écrit la musique en 1980. Le matériau musical de ce quintette est aussi partiellement de la musique de scène, et s'y ajoute la musique de la pièce pour choeur, Untitled. Des allusions à la musique du XVII, siècle complètent la partition : Rameau, dont émane la succession harmonique permettant de conduire l'oeuvre à son point culminant, et Lully, qui fournit le matériau joué par le piano dans la partie centrale de la pièce, lors de la mort de Molière.La dramaturgie musicale, qui pour Lindberg signifie plus construction que narration, vient du monde de théâtre : sa musique progresse par scènes et nait des tensions entre des textures différentes.
